Very good food and service. We had one of the specialty sushi rolls and the sampler. The specialty rolls are a great value for the price. Decent drink list as well. The restaurant was very clean and welcoming. The only thing I would change is perhaps make the surroundings look slightly more upscale and intimate to match the terrific food. Overall, I would highly recommend.

Rice tastes worse than uncle ben's. But it's only $2.00 Service was fair. Miso soup was great! Only $2 Lunch specials were all more than $10. Extra sauce cost money. Many vegetarian options!

Very good and always consistent! This little sushi place is one of my favorites. The ambiance is nice and the service is always good. The sushi is always fresh and delisious! I love their Miso soup which is only $2.00. If you want some tasty sushi in a cute local area go to Domo.

Awesome sushi! The grilled calamari is excellent! I highly recommend the Spicy Tuna roll.

After a recent Friday night visit I can honestly say I'm in no hurry to return to Domo. Disclaimer: I did not have sushi, which is obviously a major component of a Japanese restaurant, so I cannot speak to its quality or value. Our group of 4 arrived during a busy Friday night, but were immediately seated at a table in the middle of the restaurant, which is cozy with themed decor. The ambiance is appropriate, but not luxurious. Things were going well until the extremely long wait for our food. Even accounting for the fact that it was a full house it took what seemed to be an eternity for our food to come out of the tiny kitchen. Furthermore, the plates that were ready first were set in the service area, not under a heat source. This means that if your dish happens to be the first to be plated it will likely sit and get cold until the remainder of the tables dishes are prepared. Once we did receive our food is was average at best. The Shrimp Tempura Bowl had literally 2 pieces of shrimp. C'mon man. And the Udon noodles were a little chewy. The Domo Bowl was tasty, my only complaint is that the beef was stringy. Long story short, it took forever to receive mediocre food. Nothing else about Domo makes me feel compelled to give it another shot.

Love the seafood here. Sushi chefs are Japanese which is always a plus. Service is a little slow but super friendly! Love their crab salad and their shrimp tempura roll.

Great sushi, fantastic seaweed salad. It's a bit more expensive than other equally great sushi around, but the atmosphere is well improved over those places.

Should have never given it a second try. First visit the restaurant had one other table on a Sunday evening and it took over 30 minutes to be served some of the worst sushi I've ever eaten in my life. It was a mushy mess. Not even refills on drinks. Second visit decided I wouldn't try the sushi. Wasn't my choice to come back. Ordered Garlic Shrimp. Based on the description I was hoping for a tastebud delight. Instead I received a bunch of breaded shrimp covered in honey and sesame seeds. Not a trace of garlic. The owner refused to do anything to compensate or trade out the disgustingly sweet, unhealthy dish. He insisted his business is not in the business of doing "samples!" What in the hell? The gummy shrimp was an entirely misleading menu item. He refused to change the dish or take it off the bill. I will never lower my standards again. Not coming back to this substandard establishment. I wish I could give it negative stars.

A mostly pleasant dining spot with interesting but somewhat inconsistent food and service which seems to be bit of a consensus among reviewers. We arrived as a party of three with a 6:30 reservation. I let my daughter and wife out and sought out parking as the area was packed on a Friday night and the weather cold. When I arrived 3-5 minutes later they were seated, each with a water glass in front of them, but mine missing. First clue of the evening. Whoever seated us didn't communicate the party size to the server. In fact, throughout the night I failed to see anyone I could identify as in charge of wait staff. However, at the moment it wasn't (and isn't) a big deal. Took a few minutes for the server to get by to ask for our drink orders but they were promptly delivered. We ordered appetizers, shrimp gyoza and ginger chicken. Miso soup was brought to the table as part of our dinner order and my wife and I agreed, one of the best bowls in recent memory. Truly outstanding. The ginger chicken followed with a dipping sauce. Where's the ginger taste? Lacked seasoning and looked like a plate of chicken nuggets with one small piece of parsley as garnish. Whole meat, not ground (parts) and breaded. Near the end I found a lone chunk of ginger that made it into the batter by itself. Sadly, the best part of the dish. I really don't understand the point of this selection and it clearly didn't hit the mark. Disappointing after such a spectacular bowl of miso. A sushi/sashimi boat with an extra side order of spicy octopus nigiri (always a favorite) was ordered as the entree for all to split. It arrived fairly prompt maybe 15 minutes later but we inquired what had happened to the shrimp gyoza? "It's on its way," we were told. It arrived after completion of the meal. Presentation was beautiful, the rice and fish were all delicious, no complaints. Spicy octopus is typically mixed with remnants of tempura batter and then mixed with a spicy sauce (typically sriracha based). The texture, the octopus and the heat make a great combination. This was simply bits of the animal with a bit of sauce, but little kick. Another disappointment. We were wondering about the gyoza and they did finally arrive. We were ready to be let down. Gyoza in most restaurants are simply out of the bag and heated up. Still like them but why not fresh? Well, these were fresh and they were spectacular. But why deliver at the end of the meal with no apology or acknowledgement. Strange. Domo has a management problem to my eye. Our family has eaten a hell of a lot of sushi as a trio and there was a visible lack of cohesion in the front and back of the house on this Friday night. Our server was very pleasant but was clearly covering too many tables by herself and was visibly stressed. This could be a great space but needs updating. It's crowded, noisy and the tables are arranged to maximize seating, not serve the customer's comfort. Although we had a enjoyable meal we were perplexed by the experience. It's not a bad place to dine but there are 2-3 sushi venues in Lawrence far better vs. driving 45 minutes for this.

Oh man, I REALLY REALLY wanted to like this place-- and it isn't of me to rate a restaurant 1 star. Since my husband has moved to Kansas City, we have been on a hunt for a sushi restaurant, but alas, I am feeling like it is a great white buffalo-- a mythical creature that doesn't exist in KC. And, believe me, I am not some West Coast snob that doesn't believe sushi exists outside of the coasts-- I have indeed had GREAT sushi in the Midwest-- unfortunately it is not at DOMO. Here is out experience: 1. My husband's meal arrived 30 minutes prior to my sushi rolls. 2. Fish was bland/ tasteless. Canned fish taste better than this. 3. Service is horrible and takes FOREVER. 4. Cuts of fish in the cherashi are uneven. I got two slices of really bad salmon, three pieces of tuna, and one piece of some type of tuna...seriously... this is worst than sushi apprentices. 5. Place wasn't even crowded, and yet the waitress and service was super rude. IDK... maybe it was an off day, but I know I will never go here again. For $50, I would rather spend it towards an airplane ticket to Chicago to get some decent sushi.

Food is perfect. Staff is friendly and genuine and fast. Place is setup pretty and with a flow. Price is what it should be. Area has parking. Other establishments within meandering range. Drinks are made well. Happy tummyyyyyyy! Found a new favorite. Get this place some more stars.

This place. This. Place. Domo hits all of my happy spots. Full disclosure, this review is probably biased since Domo reminds me so much of my favorite Japanese place back in FL. Everything from the duo behind the counter to the menu was a throwback. Anyway, onward! You can expect the standard sushi fare, with reasonable prices. The miso soup I had was great, rice was fresh and hot. Service was friendly and attentive, even though they seemed pretty slammed. The big thing that caught me here was the menu for cooked foods. With stuff like Oyako-don (Chicken with sweet egg and onion over rice) on there, this is comfort food all the way. Overall, my meal didn't break the bank and I left fat and happy. I'll definitely be back.

Love this place. We go a little early if on a weekend. They get busy and always seem short staffed. But the sushi is good, drinks are good and the atmosphere is good.

Wrapped up dinner here a couple of hours ago and I have been feeling sick since. I think the sashimi is the culprit: my wife and I shared every other dish and she feels fine. The cooked food we had was good so I would recommend going that route. Dropping $70 on dinner only to end up sick is pretty disappointing. I am starting to think eating sushi in the Midwest is just a bad idea.

This is our neighborhood sushi place, and we patronize it often. We came in before 6 p.m. last night, and were we glad we did! They got busy within half an hour after we sat down. It was obvious they were training a new staff member, and I noticed a couple of other new faces. We ordered one of our favorites, the Chirashi (sashimi boat, chef's pick). We decided to pair it with miso soup instead of the salad option. Our soup came quickly, as well as my octopus and seaweed salad. A great starter: refreshing and not overdressed. The sashimi boat was delightful, as always. I noticed that they lined half it with sushi rice, and the rest with rice noodles. Service was attentive, and it was good to know that you can call ahead to reserve seating, especially if you have a larger party ( more than 4, since accommodating it would require putting tables together).

Although I love sushi, I actually go to Domo for the Domo Bowl - which is amazing! I got my friends to try it the other night and they are sold on it. The Domo Bowl is rice, beef, vegetables, seaweed salad and egg all combined with spicy sauce on the side. I crave everything and anything spicy so I don't think the sauce is intolerable but my friends thought it was hot - so caution on that. I think I could eat a Domo Bowl everyday but I've had their sushi too and it's great. The service can sometimes be slow if they are busy on a weekend night - be prepared to wait for your tasty food. I think it's well worth it.

Disappointed. Frequent here often but the fish quality is seeming to slip. The sushi was warm today and smelled fishy. The rice was tasteless and rolls were not worth ordering...despite knowing our dissatisfaction, nothing was done about it. $50 down the drain. Won't be back for a while...hopefully they turn things around.

Though the service took a little while considering the restaurant was nearly empty... This was still pretty great overall. Got some california rolls, tempura yam roll, orange ocean (shazam, that was a flavor explosion). Happy hour had a small menu, but some good deals. I do not really "know" sushi all that well, but I enjoyed what I had.

I came here based on other great ratings and was not disappointed! Five stars all the way, for not only good but the service. The two gals there on a Sunday night never stopped moving or refilling drinks or welcoming new customers. I had the Domo Special, special it was, a great combo of all things sushi that left me full enough and not hurting. My wife isn't a fan and found the sesame chicken, which blew both of our minds with a light crunchy batter on super white chicken with almost sticky sauce which couldn't be beat!

My favorite sushi in KC! Yes, the space could use a face lift and the service seems well -intentioned if a little harried. But, the food is really fantastic. I have tried more of their sushi than I can recall. The sexy mama remains my favorite. The seaweed salad is also a favorite along with the miso soup. The Domo bowls are a nice alternative to sushi. Have been in the summer for cocktails and the winter for hot saki. It was all good.

Took the wife here for her birthday, very happy I did. Really good sushi. We were there on a Sunday afternoon, and it was quiet. We were seated promptly, given drinks, and ordered about 10 mins later. We had five different types of rolls, including the Las Vegas roll, yellowtail, and scallop rolls. All were terrific, and looked fantastic on the platter. I would've liked to see some different sauces for flavor on a couple of the rolls, but that's a minor quibble. Service was decent. There were a couple times I felt we were left hanging, but after our server knew it was my wife's birthday, she brought her some complimentary ice cream, which was appreciated. Overall, great experience, and will definitely be back. It's one of the better spots in town to this point of my search for good Japanese cuisine. There are some other places to try, but I wouldn't hesitate to make a return visit.

Short version: Great sushi, extensive sushi menu is a bit redundant with ingredients, mediocre to poor service. Amazing salmon nigiri and miso soup. Long version: This is currently one of my go-to sushi places at the time of this review. The prices are moderate for this type of fare, and the portions are as well. I have never felt like anything I've ordered here was too small. Their salmon nigiri is always awesome, though the first couple times I went there were tiny lemon wedges on each piece, which was not good for the look or flavor. The last time I went they didn't have this, so maybe they stopped doing that. I'll have to ask about it next time I'm there. This is one of those "mark down your own order" restaurants, which I'm not too fond of, especially since it makes ordering nigiri confusing. If the menu says "Nigiri (2 pieces)" and I mark down 2 next to nigiri, I always feel I need to double check with the server to make sure they know I want two orders and not two pieces. I've had mistakes at some restaurants in that regard. The miso soup I had here had some freshly chopped green onions in it and small cubes of tofu, as well as nori. It was the best miso soup I've ever had. The menu has a lot of different maki rolls, but is strangely organized. There is a separate special menu that has maybe 6 to 8 rolls on it (as well as lots of other food items) aside from the normal menu, and no server has ever informed us of the differences in the two menus or at least brought to our attention that there is sushi on both menus. Aside from that, despite there being many types of rolls to choose from, the recipes aren't very diverse. Avocado occupies probably half of them, and spicy recipes occupy almost the other half. As for rolls, I'm not a huge fan of avocado in sushi and will usually only order one at the most that has it. The last time I went I wanted to order rolls that had neither avocado, fried, or spicy, and I found that that left probably only 15% of the maki rolls menu remaining (out of 40 or so types)... other than the basic single ingredient ones. We've never had good service here in the three times I've gone. The servers are very inattentive, don't really try to be friendly or introduce anything, and are slow even when the place is lightly occupied. The person I've gone with most often is a restaurant manager and I have to pour ice on him to keep him from turning red with frustration over how the wait staff behaves here (I don't literally do this, or I'd expect bad service). Haha. On the other hand, I wouldn't say they have bad or rude service. They just seem to not really care too much about good service. The last time I went we were told to sit anywhere and it took several minutes of being unattended before the sushi chef told one of the servers "You've got a table right here that hasn't even been checked on." The sushi chef's job is to make sushi. He should only be focused on this and never have to babysit the servers. Poor guy, but props to him for his level of attention to the restaurant as a whole. The atmosphere is nice to an extent, but some of the decor is tacky and over-the-top. Some of the more eye-catching pieces, whether it be a huge seasonal floral arrangement, or the fountains that circulate tiny floating balls, would fit into the atmosphere wonderfully if there weren't two of them on the sushi bar. Sometimes less is more and one is enough. The sushi bar area looks cluttered with decor. The best area to sit at night is in the window booths at the front of the store where they've got some beautiful red paper lanterns. There are only two tables in that area, however, so they are almost always occupied when we go there. We also seemed to get even less attentive service when we sat there, as if they forgot we were tucked away in the corner. My four-stars for this review mostly goes to the fact that I've really loved the food I've had at Domo and the prices weren't murderous, so I know I'll be going back for a while until I find a place with just as good food and better service and atmosphere. My advice for Domo: Give your servers some pressure or incentive (whichever they need) to be more attentive and helpful. Work on consolidating to one menu and diversifying or trimming down the maki roll menu, as many of the rolls are very similar to others. People can request a slight variation of a roll without seeing that variation listed on the menu as a separate roll. The menu is so extensive it can take a long time to decide what you want. This means longer visits from your customers, fewer tips for your servers, and makes it harder for your servers to be as attentive. Also, stick with no lemon on the nigiri. Nigiri is meant to be unadulterated by other ingredients, a small amount of wasabi being the only generally accepted one.

The food was excellent and seemed very fresh. Service was pretty good. The menu had great variety. I would highly recommend the fried domo roll. Lighting was very nice and relaxed. It wasn't too noisy. We went a little after dinner time and didn't have to wait for a table. Good date place if you can eat with chop sticks or don't mind the embarassment of not being able to use them.

I've come here a few times and had a decent meal, but more often I leave disappointed. The service is very hit or miss, and the last time we went, the service was absolutely terrible (we had to ask for menus after several minutes, and we're not brought any water for over 20 minutes after we sat down). I would not recommend this restaurant to a friend as there are plenty of sushi places that have decent service and better food.

Sushi was decent, food cane in a timely manner. Service was ok. They were attentive enough, but definitely did not go above and beyond to "wow" us. For the price I would expect the best sushi ever. I actually prefer kokoros to this place.

We just got take-out so, I can't really rate the service, but it was ready quickly and getting in and out was easy. The sushi was pretty average. We had the rainbow roll, volcano roll, the domo and the poki hama. Everything was good, the volcano was our favorite. Maybe it was just our selection, but nothing really blew me away. However, I got the coconut basil shimp with udon noodles for lunch the next day and that was delicious! The sauce is creamy and has a great coconut flavor. I will be coming in for that again, for sure!

I met about 18 or 19 others here for dinner. The place was easy to spot mainly because there was a UPS Store next door which meant a UPS truck was parked in front and blocked this restaurant for however amount of minutes. The size of this place wasn't small but it also wasn't big. The waitress was nice and accommodated us pretty nicely. She even split up everybody's orders so they would all be separate checks; in addition, the tip was already calculated and included. I wasn't really in the mood for sushi so I ordered something else. I saw other Yelpers mentioned the Yoshi Bowl in their reviews. It was my first choice; however, the Domo Bowl caught my eye. I couldn't decided which one I wanted because the Yoshi Bowl ($11.50) had noodles with grilled pork. On the other hand, the Domo Bowl ($11.50) had rice with beef. I finally chose the Yoshi Bowl since almost everybody chose the Domo Bowl. The food took awhile to come out but that's because a bunch of us ordered sushi. It was fine by me since I was busy talking with everybody around me but it also made me more hungry. The Yoshi Bowl looked really good and really picture-worthy in my opinion. The best way to describe the Yoshi Bowl was how it resembled the vermicelli bowls at Vietnamese restaurants because it also came with the fish sauce (based on the smell of it). Everybody who ordered a Domo Bowl around me told me the Yoshi Bowl looked pretty good and I agreed. I was still hungry and my friend was hungry too. He asked me if I wanted to split a Domo Bowl and I agreed. The Domo Bowl was delicious and the spicy sauce (not really spicy to me) complemented it perfectly in my opinion. It was pretty much bibimbap. I felt like the bowl would be the right amount of food for one person. I recommend either the Yoshi Bowl (if you feel like eating noodles) or the Domo Bowl (if you feel like eating rice). You can't go wrong with either one. I'll need to come back to try the sushi here!

Waitress was super nice..I mean REALLY nice and extremely helpful with our questions on the menu. She kept my tea filled... served beer in a chilled glass... checked on us from time to time, but didn't hover. We ordered the 2 ball 1 strike, the volcano roll, spicy lobster and Kama roll. All were very good, but the 2 ball 1 strike was a favorite of mine. Spicy tuna in avocado halves.... mmmm... Not too busy for a Saturday evening. Thanked us on the way out.. Good food and service... definitely would recommend.

Tonight was my first night eating at Domo. I checked their online menu and found a dish that I was expecting to try tonight. When I received the menu at the restaurant, it was completely different from the online menu. The dish I was expecting to try was no longer offered. The menu was confusing because the food description was not in detail. The menu would say, "assorted vegetable", instead of going into detail such as listing each type of vegetable in the dish. I kept on asking our waitress what vegetables were in the dish, but there seemed to be a language barrier between us. I went ahead and order a dish with tofu and assorted vegetables, not knowing what vegetables I would be receiving in my dish. The dish I received was full of a bunch of vegetables I don't care for such as, cabbage, onion, and bell pepper. The dish lacked flavor. Instead of being cooked with a spicy sauce, it came with a side dish of spicy sauce. I was pretty dissatisfied with my dish. I figured I would order the mochi ice cream, to redeem my dissatisfaction with my dish. They no longer serve the assorted flavors of mochi ice cream. I left Domo unhappy and still hungry.

My husband and i went on a recent trip to cansas after checking reviews for japanese places. The food was great, I had the Domo special wich was plenty of food and really fresh, my husband had a yoshi bowl, which was delicious. King Kong for desert, looked cool and was super tasty! Great evening altogether, would definitely come again for fresh fish if I lived here! Also, the service was actually really good, the server was sweet and attentive, i was surprised after some of the comments!

I'm picky about my sushi, but Domo isn't half bad. Parents shared the Domo special (good size, but still not filling enough for two people) and the sashimi sampler (the fish was really fresh!) My coconut shrimp basil was actually awesome and not overbearingly sweet as expected, so I would recommend that if you like either coconut or shrimp. I'd love to go back and try some of the sushi rolls at some point. For a quick first visit, it was pretty good. Until next time, Domo!

This is one of those places I discover then immediately regret all the time I wasn't in the know about the place. Delicious, fresh great tasting rolls. They're very colorful and made beautifully. The spicy tuna is some of the best I've had and does not have the paste consistency of others I've tried. I love that they don't all come with the Americanized mayonnaise sauces and deep fried like Drunken Fish. Our waiter Nom was excellent and extremely attentive and made a lot of conversation. The only mystery is where they get their fish, when asked Nom told us that they won't tell him so that sounds a little odd. The ambiance is great and I will definitely be returning!

A couple of dishes to avoid... I'm sure you've noticed that good restaurants have a few great dishes and a few that they should remove from the menu... Maybe I shouldn't have gone to this place at all, or maybe I should have tried a meal suggested by Yelpers that had gone before me. The service was great. There were two waitresses handling the whole house and the place was pretty full on a Sunday evening. But despite the room being hectic for both of them they seemed to keep up - there were no delays for me, anyway. There is no complimentary sunomono or tea, but it's ok if they do it that way. The sake was a good generic sake, correctly heated, served promptly and typically priced. I had found their menu online and, unlike a lot of restaurants, it is pretty similar (IMO) to the printed in-house menu. They had one of my favorite restaurant dishes - Green Curry with tofu - and that was what prompted me to go there. It seems like a very nice place and I think I was just unlucky with my choices. I'm guessing that there are a few gems on that menu... I wasn't going to eat sushi but she sat me at the sushi bar. The sushi list "made me" order something tasty and negihama (another favorite) seemed pretty attractive. I put my order in with the itamai and then the waitress appeared to take my order for the green curry with tofu. It had become an addiction of sorts for me in New Jersey at Green Papaya and a couple of north Jersey Thai houses. I guess Green Papaya spoiled me as far as thai-style curries are concerned. Green Papaya makes the best. The big plate of negihama was passed over the fish fridge. Certainly not bad, but it was nothing to write home about. Just ok to this finicky gastronome. How to make it better? Use about 20 or 25% more chopped fish & onion mix (we need a little bigger dot in the center.) and do something about that saltiness. Is that extra salt in the rice or is it in the fish mix? Whichever, the salt is overdone. Still, maybe I was hungry, because I finished it. Then the anticipated Green Curry! But there was no resemblance here at Domo to all the other versions I've had. I can not recommend it. For my taster it is just done wrong. The tofu itself seemed like a good one for this dish, and the veggies, although different and julienned, were good as well. But breading the tofu (!) is not to my liking. (And think about it - breading tofu is the antithesis of tofu.) And the curry sauce of this dish is made with a sweetened "thick coconut milk" that is overpowering and atypical. A lot of the time "atypical" is great. But in this case it doesn't come out good. It is as if a chef read a recipe and didn't know about all the different "coconut milks." (Is this style really an actual Japanese curry? I doubt it, but maybe. If so, ok. But I still can't eat it.) This curry is fixable but it has a long way to go. Foremost is experimenting with coconut milks. Find a "thin" milk that's still a little coconutty but WAY less sweet. If you want to thicken it do it some neutral way like cornstarch or something similar. Ordinarily I would recommend that the chef just go to a couple of Thai places and see if he likes what they do with this meal. But I must confess that I have no suggestions in the KC area. Not that there aren't any great Thai-style green curries here, but I haven't found them yet. Ok, in the end this is just my opinion. But don't experiment with this unless you want "really sweet," and you want a breaded tofu.

As I try to eat light, I've been making my way around the sushi places in town. So far, this is my favorite. It's not the ambiance, as there are some super-cheesy decorations on the bar. And it's not the service, which is good but not overly speedy. No, it's the food, which is great enough to outweigh such minor details. Every time I come here, I notice the high quality of the ingredients. The rolls have interesting flavors and the condiments are fresh. And lest you think that I can't judge because I order from their nice selection of veggie rolls, I can offer the opinion of my carnivorous, fish-eating BF, who concurs that this is his favorite sushi in town.

Every time I have been there the service is either weird or slow, but I still like it. It is cute in there & they have big portions & tasty fish. Don't listen to the freak on here that said the music is good; it is creepy and depressing.

Oh Domo. Domo, Domo, Domo... If only you would have kept your stuff together for the past few minutes of my dining experience, you would have been a shoe-in for 4 stars, and maybe even a contender for 5. Let's do this review in a Clint Eastwood theme: The Good: 1)The food! We had both barely eaten all day and were famished by the time we arrived at Domo. We immediately ordered an odd (to me at least) appetizer, that claimed to be grilled beef wrapped in green onions. We found this odd, and wanted to check it out. Seems the menu is misprinted and it's actually green onions wrapped in beef. Still, it was tasty. When it came time to get sushi we went with scallop, conch, and octopus nigiri, as well as their Caterpillar and Samurai rolls. It was all fresh and delicious. I would eat here again in a heartbeat. 2)The music! While this place is decidedly not trendy or chic, the music would not have been out of place in the most secret little speakeasy of all time. Ridiculously international, it sounded like I was dining inside a James Bond movie. I approve. The Bad: Our server was weirdly inattentive during the meal. He just didn't seem to notice things like empty glasses and so forth. It wasn't very busy, he just must have been scatterbrained. The Ugly: We arrived about an hour before the restaurant closed, so we knew we'd be pushing getting out of there before they turned off the "open" sign. Regardless, with ourselves and another large table of patrons still in the restaurant, 4 minutes after closing time they have all of the chairs up on the tables, the lights up, and the music turned off and switched onto the baseball game! I just dropped almost $90 on dinner, I think you all could be a little more patient! Then the server comes by and takes the signed slip off the table because he needs to be checking out. Look, I understand what it's like to want to go home at the end of the night. But I really don't feel as if 4 minutes (and yes i checked my watch) after closing falls in the window of "times when you can go ahead and grab the check w/o it being rude as hell" A good experience tainted by a completely unwelcoming vibe at the end. 3 stars.

This place is absolutely amazing! Why is it not busier? We had a fantastic waitress who apparently thought we looked cool enough to forego forks for chopsticks. So yes, we ate very slowly, but by the end of the meal we considered ourselves pros...well sort of. The waitress explained the menu and gave us the perfect amount of time to look over the generous but not overwhelming amount of selections. We chose the Yoshi bowl, the Domo roll, the spicy tuna roll, and the white fish roll. Everything was delivered quickly and the presentation was beautiful. Our server's visits were perfectly timed, and we made it out of there for under $40 bucks. What a deal! I'm not afraid to say it, it's the best sushi we've had in KC. Not San Francisco quality, but let's be fair! It's pretty damn good for the Midwest! I think we will have to try happy hour next time...

My husband and I ate here on our first anniversary, and it was by far some of the best sushi I have ever had. The atmosphere is lovely, and the restaurant is small enough to feel intimate and classy. The employees are friendly, kind, and fast-working. Their fried veggie roll is by far the best thing on the menu. The texture is delicious and the flavors blend wonderfully. My husband also recommends the alligator roll.

Domo has never failed to please here. I've had lunch, happy hour, and dinner; sushi and noodle dishes (in different combinations) alike. I thought the sushi was quite good (second fave in KC, maybe?) and the happy hour deals are fantasticity! I initially thought the lunch prices seemed on the high end...until I got my food. Not sure why they even have a lunch menu. Them's was dinner-sized entrees! I'd say if you are going for a lighter lunch, go a la carte. You can't go wrong with the dumplings + miso, or even just a smaller order of sushi + house salad. I NEED to find out what that house dressing is. I'd eat it everyday. The BF is a big Bento box lover and his beef teriyaki didn't fail to please last time we were there. Also--lots o' food.

I like you Domo, which is surprising since I'm very picky when it comes to my sushi! I recently dined here with a friend and had a really good experience. The place seems very traditional to me with the scenic Japanese murals, small tables, and screens dividing the tables up. Service was friendly and attentive and my water glass never went empty. They do have some happy hour specials, but it's a very limited selection compared to other sushi restaurants that I've been to during happy hour. My friend and I each got a carafe of saki and a Kirin. We shared 3 rolls, which were presented beautifully. We got the Spicy Lobster, which was basically lobster salad and avocado and it was very good! We also got the fried veggie roll. Cream cheese and veggies wrapped in a fried roll....who doesn't like fried food?! My favorite was the tempura yam roll. I thought it was very flavorful. Compared to other sushi restaurants, I thought the prices were very fair for the amount and quality of food that you get.

Excellent Sushi I really enjoyed our dinner at Domo I am not a huge Sushi person but will eat some of the California rolls. I will have to say had dinner with my son's for one of their birthdays. My boys are huge Sushi fans and will eat any and all. We all loved everything. Service was great, rolls were delicious and beautiful. Salad was excellent. I am now a huge fan.

Overall, I was impressed with our experience. We ordered miso soup, sashimi sampler, my wife had avocado rolls, and I ordered the yoshi bowl. Of course I ordered some sake too. The miso soup was tasty with no complaints. I didn't try the avocado rolls since my wife was busy chowing them down...and a minor detail that I'm a bit allergic to raw avocados. The yoshi bowl was tasty with nicely cooked seasoned pork chucks, yellow and red peppers, clear noodles, served on a bed of greens. It was light (except the pork) but yet had good favor with a spicy hint. The sashimi sampler (chef's choice) was served with three different types of fish: white fish (sea bass), salmon, and tuna. The tuna wasn't the freshest I've had even for the Midwest. However, the white fish and salmon I thought were quite good. All the food had very nice/pretty presentation! Domo's interior was cute. The service was fantastic! We had a very nice and helpful waitress. Summary: * Beautiful presentation on all the food * Yoshi bowl and miso soup was good * Sashimi sampler was good but the tuna didn't taste that fresh even for the Midwest. The sea bass and salmon was good * Very good service * Cute interior

The lunch menu is great, but be fore-warned that they are only open for lunch Wednesday-Sunday. I would advise patrons to avoid the iced tea because it is some sort of unpleasant instant variety; I order hot green tea year round. That said, there are few complaints about the food or the service. The atmosphere of the dining room is pleasant, and the quality of the sushi is really top notch. If you're disinclined toward raw fish (not a problem for me, but I respect that not everyone is into sashimi), I'd recommend the tempura bowl with udon; it's a great combination of food and flavors, and the meal is very filling; a good value!

I really like Domo. The food is always so good. The most amazing item to order is the "tempura yam roll"! A M A Z Ing! I'm also I sucker for miso soup and they of course have that too. I love the atmosphere and the decor. It's really nicely done and very peaceful. The only downside to Domo is the service. The service itself is good, but just not very quick. Make sure you have sometime to sit and relax because you will be frustrated if you need to get out of there quickly. Go and try some great food in a great space when you have time to relax and catch up with a loved one.

YES PLEASE. This place is freaking adorable. The decor is super inviting, calming and swanky, all in one. I was in the middle of a sushi binge (and perhaps still am...) so we set out on Labor Day of all days to find something to calm me down. I'd never heard of Domo before but decided to go on an adventure and try it out. So glad I did. The menu explains exactly what is in every roll, and I went with my standard avocado roll and tried the tofu roll. The avocado had humongous pieces in it. The tofu came with crispy tofu and veggies crammed into it. I thought it was delicious, boy I was eating with begged to differ. You have to give him an E for Effort for trying it at least, right? We finished everything (I had to psych myself up for it and give away 2 pieces of my meal...stuffed, but who can leave any sush behind?!) and I didn't have to eat for the rest of the day. Service was super friendly and attentive, but it took for.ev.er . to get our rolls, including my 2 piddly veggie ones. I'm sure this had to do with it being a holiday and the only other (big) party in the place sounding obnoxious and ordering a gazillion things. On the plus side, they were made beautifully and held together through my jankety chopstick use. (I'm getting better!) I'll be back!!!

Loved Domo! Great place for a date and very friendly and fast service. A large menu to select from, however there were a couple items on the sushi list that aren't actually available. I would strongly recommend the spicy octopus roll!

Solid 4 stars for Domo. We stopped in around 7ish on a Saturday evening. The place was busy, but we were seated with no wait. The service was outstanding, the menu was explained and any questions we had were promtly answered. We ordered edamame as a starter, 6 Las Vegas rolls, 6 Domo rolls, and 4 shrimp sashimi as our main. The edamame was as expected, warm, salted appropriately. The sushi was hearty, rolled nicely, and tasted fresh. I considered it outstanding, the Las Vegas rolls being my favorite, but would not hesitate to order the Domo rolls again. The only drawback, which was minor, was the wait time. They were bumping and had all available hands rolling sushi, so it wasn't due to a lack of effort on Domo's part, more of a beautiful Saturday evening induced wait time. I'm habitual with my sushi and Domo has captured my business. I'm anxious to return and experience their vast menu.

OK...so I'll admit I love sushi...not a bad thing at all, but alas I had never been to a sushi bar before. I must say that the entrees and the appetizers are delectable. Sure it's a but pricey, but then, why put out small change for a not-so-exciting meal?! This one was worth it. Desert was a treat as well. Server was helpful and I couldn't help but enjoy watch the chef prepare his delicacies. I did not take notes as to exactly what I ate, but I can say that the possibilities were endless, and if in doubt, the server can provide suggestions--all of which are good. It was worth it!

Sexy? No. Amazing? No. Nice presentation? YES! OK, so you're treated well here. I sat at the Sushi bar. Chatted with the sushi chef, who didn't speak english tremendously well. I think he was from a country down south. I asked him what things were and he told me what was in them with a smile on his face and made small talk. His sous chefs were Japanese women dressed up in traditional garb. It was a cute restaurant. The plum wine was amazing. However, what I came for was the sushi. What it looked like and tasted like were different. The sushi was a bit lacking in taste and texture. Highly disappointing, especially after reading these reviews. Perhaps it's in comparison as I haven't found good sushi yet in the 3 places I've sampled it in KCMO. Isn't all fish frozen and flown in these days anyway? Being away from the ocean shouldn't deter good sushi.

I didn't think we had great sushi in KC till I came here the first time five or six years ago...it's been a staple for me ever since. At times the sushi bar can be a little slow, but good food takes time. And it's *always* worth the wait. Furthermore, I can say that their plates from the kitchen are always delicious and provide a great alternative if you have anyone in your party who wrinkles their midwestern nose at the idea of sushi--even my dad (aka the least adventurous eater EVER) is a sucker for their succulent teriyaki chicken. Finally, the icing on the cake--they have low staff turnover so the same friendly faces have greeted me (and guessed my order upon arrival) for years, making this feel like the neighborhood gem that it is! We love Domo!

OMG, we love DOMO!!! we eat here at least twice a week. in fact, they know us. because we are there so often. we've tried almost every sushi place in kansas city. this is as good as it gets. get the big O roll. get the Philadelphia roll (made with real salmon, not smoked.) get the kama roll. the wine list is really nice, too. yum, yum. there is one waiter that is questionable, but he tries. so give him patience.

Good food. I tried a beef noodle soup, spring rolls, the spider roll and another roll with softshell crab. My date doesn't like anything with tuna or salmon, and I don't like eel (eel sauce can be good) so that severely limits my sushi choices. Yep, good food, but an ultimately forgettable experience. The waiter was fine; precise and a bit inanimate. Everything neat, tidy, and fabricated.

Best sushi place in KC. Period. I have tried many and none even come close to Domo. I am a vegetarian, however, I do occasionally live a little and sushi is at the top of my list when I do. This place tests my willpower! The ambiance inside is intimate, trendy and classy all at the same time. The outdoor patio is fantastic as well. The service is top notch and if you are a regular they will remember your order. I recently found this during the Brookside Art Fair and I cannot wait to go back!

I loved the atmosphere and service at this place. The food was a bit pricy, but worth it for the occasional treat. Sushi was as fresh as possible in the midwest, and they've got a great variety to choose from.

Love this place. I have been several times. Great lunch menu with unique rice, noodle, and soup items. Each dish I've tried has traditional Asian flare with a twist of something unique. Staff is great and service is always good. I have actually been craving a rice bowl for some time now. Need to get back. Dinner menu is not the same and I was a bit let down not to see any items repeated from lunch to dinner. Sushi is fine but not my favorite there. Go and try some of their dishes. Worth the try!

I like this place and they have Wasabi Tobiko on the menu, which you can't find everywhere. I always have the sushi and on the last outing also tried the dumpling appetizers.

Lunch time, dinner time, take-out time, Domo will make you haaaaapppyyyyy. If you've read my reviews before, you know that I spent a few years living in Japan and I am rather finicky about my sushi. While Domo does cater to American tastes, they also have some great authentic dishes and sushi. The fish is of a high quality and the flavor palette is right on. They serve up some excellent tempura, and while I was slightly disappointed to see them serve their tendon (tempura and noodle bowl) American style (tempura on the side, not in the soup), it was easy enough for me to remedy the situation myself. On other occasions I've tried the Las Vegas roll, Domo roll, spicy tuna roll, sake nigiri and enjoyed their perfectly prepared unagi. I've yet to encounter anything I don't like, and I'm super excited to see that they have okonomiyaki on the menu, which is incredibly difficult to find in the US. The one negative is that they don't have matcha salt- the true litmus test of a sushi restaurant. The atmosphere is sweet and very Brookside, and the staff is helpful and friendly. Definitely a KC favorite.

Great little sushi place in the heart of Brookside. The dining room is small, but set up very well. You also have a patio dining option. The service is very good every single time. The rolls are very good, though I have not ventured out to the rest of the menu yet. Still, one of my favorite places to go if i'm looking for something a little Japanese.

I placed a take-out order and literally just got home with it, opened it up and am disgusted. When I called to place my order of an order of teriyaki chicken and one Las Vegas roll, the lady said it would be a 30 minute wait because the sushi roll would take 30 minutes to make.. okay, that's fine. Anyways, I arrive home after picking up my food, starving, open up my food and immediately lost my appetite. First of all, the sushi looked like it took 5 minutes to make, not 30 minutes and had a horrible smell to it. I ate one piece and then decided I shouldn't eat anymore so I wouldn't be hugging my toilet all night. Moving on to the teriyaki chicken.. I open it up and it's cold, and there are huge chunks of dark meat chicken that is cut up with huge slices of peppers on them..okay, I give it a try.. The "chicken" has the weirdest texture, has zero flavor and is slimy, I can't do it. I'm super bummed that not only did I spend $30 on what I thought was going to be a delicious meal, but also on the quality of the food. Domo, I'm not into it. Considering my apartment has zero food in it.. looks like it's popcorn for dinner! Thanks Domo.

After just moving down to KC from Minneapolis, I wondered if I could find good sushi in town in another land locked state. Domo is very, very good. The fish has been very fresh on both visits, the less traditional cooked rolls can also satisfy the individual who says they love sushi but never eat anything raw. Service is excellent and prices are amazingly reasonable.

4 1/2 stars. Wow! Very impressed. Great edamame. Great veggie tempura. Tasty miso. Fresh nigiri. Very tasty yoshi bowl. Tasty green tea. Excellent service. Calming, traditional place.

My friend and I went here for dinner. Apparently if you arrive early they have happy hour. We shared 3 rolls and miso soup for $24!!! We had a hot roll that was awesome, a California roll which was good and a yam roll which was awesome!!! Anyway, since my boyfriend probably won't want to go hang out in Waldo I will probably go back with my girlfriends.

THE BEST SUSHI IN KC...and I've searched far and wide. The fish is fresh. The rolls are inventive. The wasabi is the real. The staff is friendly. The environment is relaxed. The prices are resonable. Do I have you convinced?

We were craving sushi and decided to try Domo because it's so conveniently located. Despite it being a full house we were seated right away and got good service throughout the meal. I wasn't blown away by anything I ate here but I was satisfied with the selection of rolls and quality of the sushi. I was happy that they had Asahi which is my favorite Japanese beer.

Unfortunately I can't comment on the food or service as I received neither. Walked out after being seated by hostess and waitstaff walked by table repeatedly with no acknowledgement, on a slow night no less. In this economy I refuse to beg for service.

The service was great but the sushi was just missing something. I don't know if it was the quality of fish (Yes, I know MO is a land locked state) or something else, but it just didn't satisfy my craving. I feel that I can go to Dean & Deluca or Whole Foods and get some pre-packaged sushi that will do the job for me and is less expensive.

This is my new favorite sushi in town. The only reason I marked it down a star was because I found a fly nestled in the lettuce leaves of my salad the other night. The salad was fresh, perhaps too fresh. It could have happened at any other restaurant that washes lettuce, but even so, it turned my stomach a bit. Besides the "fly incident" as it is known in my house, the sushi is well made and well priced. I go to Jun's off of State Line a lot with my sushi-loving friends and family, and pay much more there than I do at Domo for practically the same meal. The staff is excellent. I really dislike a place that train servers to harass their tables. I've been fortunate to have the same kind waitress every time I have eaten there, and she is respectful of the customer's conversations and overall dining experience. The ease of the menu is also a bonus. Each table is supplied with a long sheet of paper listing all menu options and a short pencil to check off the certain meal desired, the quantity ordered, and the price totaled. It is simple and delicious, I recommend the spicy tuna.

Yes, yes - You heard about this restaurant on the news when that bank robber hid there, but really, what restaurant wants that to be the only thing it is known for? Luckily, Domo is so amazingly good it can make a name for itself on its own merit. First off, the waitresses are amazingly friendly, attentive, and polite. Our sushi was fresh and delicious, and was not that expensive. I wish I could have tried everything! One thing about dessert - we were used to having ice cream mochi at other places, and so we ordered the mochi they had on their menu. This was different from anything we had ever had: It was hot steamed sweet rice wrapped in a banana leaf that we had to peel open like a delicious present. SO GOOD! Also, I don't usually say this, but if you go there you must go into their bathroom. It is the coolest and sleekest bathroom I have ever seen in a restaurant. At least go in there to wash your hands before eating! Sheesh, didn't your mother teach you anything? ;)

I have to give Domo 4 stars for its excellent staff and cute decor, though if I were just judging the sushi it would be 1 stars. I have very high standards for sushi, which surprises even me because I thought I didn't. Being from San Francisco, sushi is dinner at least once a week. I loved my No Name (had a name, but no one could pronounce it, so it was deemed No Name). It was the cheapest sushi place (average roll cost $3-4) and you could brown bag it! But it was always hopping, and it was awesome. Sure, I went to the nice places too-but like anything, it gets expensive. So hence, I thought I was pretty casual on the fancy sushi standards. Until moving here... Having been craving sushi (it had been a month!) I kinda went crazy in my ordering. Got the standards, rainbow roll, bbq eel, spicy tuna, and some unique ones, sweet potato, a 3 fish one and had them make a pickled radish roll, which wasn't on their menu (told you, I went crazy). I was soo looking forward to this meal! And when it came, I got my soy sauce all spiced up and ready only to be sorely disappointed. The fish tasted, fishy (not a good sign for sushi), the rice was underdone, and it just lacked...what?..i couldn't put my finger on it. I ate barely a third of it, before calling defeat. I felt bad for my father who had to foot the bill, smilingly saying "Oh, I'll finish this for lunch tomorrow." Instead I had to throw it away... Next time at Domo, I'm going to skip the sushi and order something from their main menu. My dad ordered the beef fondue, and that was excellent! And my seaweed salad was tasty. I'll just have to find a new place for sushi

Food was good, tempura portion was small but the sushi and miso soup came out great! Service was friendly, environment was clean and cute. Will definitely come back!

When we are in KC, DOMO is one of our favorite places to eat! The sushi is great and their tempura dishes are excellent also. We like the busy atmosphere and the staff is always friendly. Enjoy!

Super good food, and much better service this time around. The domo bowl is awesome!
(5)Hannie D.

(5)Brandon M.
(2)Cristi S.
Sushi was decent, food cane in a timely manner. Service was ok. They were attentive enough, but definitely did not go above and beyond to "wow" us. For the price I would expect the best sushi ever. I actually prefer kokoros to this place.
(4)Jennifer A.

Pros: fresh fish, sat at sushi bar and got to interact with sushi chef who was friendly, quick service, beautiful presentation, parking is easy Cons: none

Well I am from Newport Beach CA and love Sushi...so Sushi in Kansas.... no way. Domo is awesome I give it 5-Stars. Yoshi Bowl and Sexy Mama sushi both awesome dishes.

Yummy sushi and friendly staff. The atmosphere is kind of dark and depressing but I will take it because it's clear they are just a friendly, non-pretentious neighborhood restaurant. Try the Sexy Mama roll!

(5)Kathy S.

Have the delicious crunchy crab salad. You can not have a bad night after that tasty treat.

First time visiting there last week and I'll definitely be back. The crab salad was excellent. Also had the Domo roll, spicy tuna, and spicy scallop roll. All wonderful. The service was also great.
(5)Nicole K.
(5)Elizabeth N.
Every time I have been there the service is either weird or slow, but I still like it. It is cute in there & they have big portions & tasty fish. Don't listen to the freak on here that said the music is good; it is creepy and depressing.
(4)Matt E.

(5)Molly H.
(5)Jocelyn M.
(4)Nicole B.
(4)Annamarie C.
(4)Mnason M.

(3)Mad C.
Domo, nomo. Blech! The quality of their seafood looks pretty, but is appalling.
(1)Ken B.
(4)Erin M.
(4)Stacia M.
Loved Domo! Great place for a date and very friendly and fast service. A large menu to select from, however there were a couple items on the sushi list that aren't actually available. I would strongly recommend the spicy octopus roll!
(4)Marc G.

They always have great food, decent prices and friendly staff! Great for a quickie lunch!

Really loved my experience here. Excellent miso soup, seaweed salad and rolls. Try the Domo roll and tempura yam roll . Will recommend and go back! Sat in a quiet corner booth. Great atmosphere and service.

Great service, food, drinks, atmosphere. Translate: our new sushi place! And the vegetarian rolls were perfection!

Sheesh, didn't your mother teach you anything? ;)

Cute Place although it's very small, the waitstaff is very nice and it's a convenient location for me.
